The intonation was right on, assisted by a carved saddle, and before. The AE-185 has the feel of a well-worn Les Paul Junior, with a perfect fretting job, no raw edges, and an ebony board that is resonant and a pleasure to play. All of the electronics work as they should and it's ready to go. Starting with workmanship and materials, Carvin has surpassed itself again in bringing this guitar to the marketplace. Pickups: 2x Carvin single coils (adjustable poles), 1x Carvin humbucker (adjustable poles)Īction height at 12th fret: 1/16" overall (fast)Ĭondition notes: it's only lightly-used but does show some minor dings and scratching to the body - though the natural satin finish makes them hard to see or find. Repairs included: a fret level/dress and setup. I just needed to give this a glorified setup and now that it's done, it plays on-the-dot fast and has a clean, clear tone with plenty of opportunities to kick an amp into boosted territory. Locking Sperzel tuners are at the headstock and the neck is definitely its own, fast thing - with a slightly-wider nut width and a slim front-to-back, D-shaped feel. It's got a 5-way switch and simple master volume/tone knobs. These kit guitars were offered in all sorts of configurations but this one has a hardtail bridge, two of the Carvin super-extra-polepiece single coil pickups, and one humbucker (with a single/bucker switch) at the bridge. The neck is a smoother satin and feels good. He did a decent job with it - the finish is clearly "rattlecan-grade" on the body - it's a satin spray job that shows mild texture here and there and its share of mild bumps and scratches - but it looks nice. The owner built it for his Dad some time back but it's been unused for a while, now, so it's here to hit the market.

This guitar is actually a Carvin Bolt "kit" instrument with a headstock that's been modified and with a "PM Special" decal at the front of it.
